‘Luncheon of the boating party’

Two handsome men are talking in a bar. One says to the other—“You should give him what he wants.” The second man thinks about the meaning of this question; because he has been wondering about love and his own sexuality. After a long silence he decides the answer is Yes. I am the third man. Without anything more being spoken both of us dress and shave, and make preparation to meet. My hopes, I discovered, are equalled by his new-found hopes. But when we do meet we discover the first man has killed himself. We are both grief-stricken. The second man cannot understand why it has happened, but I understand it: “It is because he loved you.”
